Wish you could do a little better with your finances? Maybe a LOT better? Could you use an extra $1,000 to jump start your plan? Well, you’re in luck!

This year the Sheboygan County Money Smart Week committee is again planning a Money Smart Financial Makeover. The rules are pretty simple. You have to want to change your financial situation. And you have to be a resident of Sheboygan County. All you need to do is fill out an application to be considered as one of the six families for this year’s competition.

Last year was the first year of the competition and the feedback from the families selected was very positive. All six families saw positive results from participating in the competition and even though not every family won the cash prizes of $1,000 or $250 sponsored by Oostburg State Bank, they all felt like winners.

Since last year was such a success, this year Ken King from Consumer Credit Counseling and I will again be coaching six lucky families over four months on how to become smarter consumers, better handle their financial situations, and set short term and long term financial goals. In short, we helped people become more Money Smart.

In addition to last year’s activities, the group financial presentations formerly only open to contestants will now be open to the public so even more people can benefit.? The sessions include topics on smart grocery shopping, budgeting, goal setting, credit and credit scores.? So even if you are not selected as one of the special six you still will be able to participate in the education programs as an extension of Money Smart Week.

I encourage you, your family, friends, neighbors, or associates to consider participating in the makeover challenge.? There are no restrictions as to income level, family size, or asset level.? That means you could be unemployed, underemployed, students, retired, anyone.

Applications are available the Sheboygan & Plymouth Area United Way Office, Family Services Association Office, and Oostburg State Bank.? There will be more locations announced in the formal announcement next week. If you can’t make it to one of these locations, you can download an application.
Give it some thought, pick up an application and get it back to the United Way office by May 26. You have nothing to lose and an opportunity to win a thousand dollars just for making some positive changes in your life!
